Abstract |

The number of patients with gastric cancer has more than doubled in many countries, and surgery remains the mainstay of treatment with curative intent. Gastrointestinal cancer produces thickening of the wall that can be observed using sonography. On sonographic examination, these abnormal lesions may appear as a mass with reniform appearance (pseudokidney sign), with a central hyperechoic region surrounded by a hypoechoic region. The pseudokidney sign was first described in colonic carcinoma and has also been described in many other entities such as in intussusception as well as in a variety of gastrointestinal diseases. The increasing use of sonography in the initial evaluation of patients with abdominal disease may allow the detection of unexpected tumors within the abdominal cavity. Therefore, the pseudokidney sign, as seen in this case, may be very helpful in the successful diagnosis of this common abdominal disease.
